Freelance Hourly Rate Calculator

Your hourly rate is not just your income divided by your hours. It also has to cover your business costs, holidays and non-billable time. This template links your yearly income goal and business costs to your real billable hours, so one change anywhere updates your rate instantly.

1How it is calculated

  1. Calculator A (Desired yearly income): what you want to earn, for example €40,000.
  2. Calculator B (Yearly business costs): software, insurance, equipment, for example €6,000.
  3. Calculator C (Total to earn): A + B = €46,000 — what your work must bring in.
  4. Calculator D (Billable hours per week): hours you can actually invoice, for example 25.
  5. Calculator E (Working weeks per year): after holidays and days off, for example 46.
  6. Calculator F (Billable hours per year): D × E = 1,150 hours.
  7. Calculator G (Hourly rate): C ÷ F = €40.00 per hour.
